Are you the target?

Do you know the basic principle of hunting? Always be vigilant — otherwise you could become the prey! The world of data is a jungle — you could do a lot of hunting, but you could just as easily get lost and become a more experienced hunter’s trophy kill. There are scavengers everywhere, and anyone could become their next target — for them your data is a tasty, tasty snack. So as we come to the end of this series, I will give you a few simple data security tips – I hope you find them useful.

  1. The Limited Trust principle — it’s not at all paranoid to not trust anyone with your data. Phishing attacks (gaining access to your account logins) are based on the psychology of gaining your trust — the criminals disguise themselves as someone you know and don’t suspect. Same goes for all kinds of website popups that encourage you to click, sign up or download stuff. Keep your eyes wide open. As the Italians like to say: Fidarsi e bene, non fidarsi è meglio! It’s good to trust, but it’s better not to trust. Remember that!
  2. Avoid the grey area — illegal software, pirate copies, shady websites and unknown service providers can all open your data up to a major security threat. If you look into the abyss, the abyss might just look back at you!
  3. New almost always means better — nothing makes you more vulnerable to attack than outdated hardware and software that is missing critical upgrades. So remember to update, update, update.
  4. Worried about spies? Work on your counterespionage! Try to stay up to speed with the world of data security. Think of data security wisdom as an arms race — don’t get left behind!

I hope you have learnt what it takes to protect your data and to make sure no one else can use it against you. Next time, we’ll check if you’ve mastered the art of data deletion and are ready to join Her Majesty’s Secret Data Deletion Service. Until next time!
